Our History

Chartered in September, 1974, the Huntsville Single Squares became part of District 1 of the ASARDA (Alabama Square And Round Dance Association). The Club's first Caller was Howard Raspilair, with Art Clark taking over in 1977. Membership was approximately 22 very active people.

Over the years, seven square dance clubs in Huntsville have disbanded for various reasons, leaving The Singles to continue the tradition. Knowing that couples also needed a place to dance, they began accepting marrieds. In 2011, the members voted to change the name of the Club to Singles & Doubles. The members got new badges and new by-laws and the Club got a new banner.

The Club has between 55-65 active members, dancing to the calls of Skip Cleland. The Club hosts a Saturday night Spring Dance each year, bringing in a guest Caller and Cuer. There are also numerous "Themed" Wednesday night dances throughout the year. Whenever possible, a group from the Club will attend Special Dances in other cities and states.
